Biography
Dr Thomas Rieger, MPH (born March 6th, 1973 in Bielefeld, Germany) is a Professor of Sport Management and leader of the Bachelor Programme Sport & Event Management and the Master Programmes International Sport & Event Management and Marketing Management at the Business and Information Technology School - BiTS in Iserlohn, Germany. He has been Chairman of the Standards Council of EuropeActive between 2012 and 2015 and is a board member of the Gaia - Institute for Environmental Management and consultant for organizational development in sport.
He finished studies in business administration, health sciences and sport science in Bielefeld (Germany) and Tübingen (Germany) with a doctoral degree (German PhD-equivalent). Furthermore, he finished his apprenticeship as a commercial clerk at the EK/servicegroup.
2000-2006 Activities in different positions of the fitness industry especially marketing and quality management.
2006-2007 Entering academia as research assistant in the Department for Economics & Media at Fresenius University of Applied Sciences.
2007 Appointment as Professor of Sport Management at the Business and Information Technology School - BiTS in Iserlohn, Germany. His main research areas are organizational development, service marketing, individual marketing and internal marketing within the sports and especially fitness industry. Until today many different projects with well-known brands and institutions in sport (e.g., Fitness First) have been implemented. Since 2008 he is a columnist for the Fitness Tribune, the leading magazine for health promotion and fitness in the German-speaking Europe. Thomas Rieger is a member of the European Association for Sport Management (
EASM), the German Society for Sport Science (dvs) and the network Public Health Postgraduates Germany (PHAD). Moreover, he served as a visiting professor at the European University Cyprus, the Universidad Europea de Madrid and the Real Madrid International School. He is a reviewer for several scientific journals, e.g., African Journal of Marketing Management. In 2003 he received the prestigious research award of the AOK and the Faculty of Health Sciences (University of Bielefeld) for his excellent achievements in health sciences.
